How to write answer-first paragraphs that AI can quote

Published October 13, 2026 · 5 min read

Short answer: lead each section with the answer in one or two plain sentences, then support it. Short, self-contained passages are easier for both readers and answer engines to reuse.

The checklist

  1. Question headings. Phrase H2s the way a person would ask them.
  2. Answer in the first sentence. No warm-up paragraph.
  3. One idea per paragraph. It should still make sense if copied alone.
  4. Use real numbers and named sources. "A 2024 KDD paper tested..." beats "studies show".
  5. Define terms once. A one-line definition is easy to quote.
  6. Add a short FAQ. Three to five real questions, with direct answers.
  7. Show author and date. It tells readers and engines the page is maintained.

Before and after

Before: "There are lots of things to think about when it comes to caching, and many site owners find it confusing."

After: "Page caching stores a ready-made copy of each page so WordPress does not rebuild it on every visit. Most sites should turn it on, and it usually cuts load time."

What this does not do

Good structure helps a page be understood and quoted. It does not decide whether an engine picks your page, which depends on the engine, the question and the competition. Google's own guidance says there is no special optimization required beyond sound SEO basics and helpful, reliable content.

The AIRankWP plugin checks several of these traits (direct answers, question headings, FAQ, sources) while you write, and tells you what to fix. See the plugin.
